Ode to Gold: Gilded & Glittered Mini Sugar Cookies

Oh gold, how I love you…

Happy Friday, everyone. I hope you all had a great week. I’ve just come off of a crazy few weeks filled to the brim with exciting projects, but all is calm again here today, and I’m super-excited for a fun weekend. Are you looking forward to Oscar night this Sunday? Grant and I do love watching the Oscars; I think we all do, right? Who doesn’t welcome some glitz and glam in their life from time to time? I know I sure do. Although I adore my current cozy life as a mommy in suburbia, whipping up sweets in my apron, and embracing all things shabby chic, deep down I am a high-maintenance glamour girl in need of some serious regality on occasion–perhaps it’s the Leo in me (which, incidentally, is also what I attribute my high forehead and huge mane of hair to). Either way, I’m definitely due for a red-carpet evening, glammed up and likely gilded & glittered in some way. I’m certain this love-for-glitz I have plays a role in my incorporating gold into so many of the confections I create.

Lately, I’ve been kind of (and by “kind of” I mean hopelessly) hooked on searching for inspirational gold images, mainly on Pinterest–the highly addictive social virtual pinboard for pinning things you love from the Internet. This photo from the fabulous Daily Cup of Couture was a recent pin of mine, and I can’t stop looking at it. I can’t decide if I want to wear that outfit or if I want to create a sparkly navy and gold cake out of it! Quite likely both…simultaneously. In the meantime, I created these 24-karat Gilded & Glittered Mini Sugar Cookies for a bite-size glitzy fix, either to indulge in during our own little personal “Oscar Party,” or, well, maybe just for breakfast:

See, last week I was working on the neatest cake project for an upcoming issue of Wedding Bells Magazine, and although the issue doesn’t hit shelves until July, I can tel you that it involved copious amounts of edible glitter, including several jars of 24-karat gold glitter dust. I suppose you could say I had my fancy pants on during that project, and although the project was complete, well, quite frankly, I wasn’t ready to trade those fancy pants in quite yet. With the Oscars coming, I thought these little (about 1-2″ each) glitter-babies would be a fun tribute to a weekend of luxe festivities, even being served hors-d’oeuvres style at Oscar parties and such. I can also envision them being an unexpected addition to a wedding–don’t forget they can be made in an array of colours.

Now, true, these are fancy, but here’s the best part: they taste divine, just as a sugar cookie should. You may be wondering what does a glitter-coated cookie taste like? The good news is that I ate many (that actually may be good news for you, and not so much for me), and I can assure you that they taste sweet and perfect, and if you let them dry properly, you won’t have glitter-lipped guests. See, as much as I love the look of luxe, I couldn’t bring myself to make or serve something that didn’t taste great as well. Basically, it’s just my sugar cookies cut into bite-size shapes, topped with glittered fondant and attached with royal icing, all of which tastes sweet and yummy.

As I was looking back through some of my previous blog posts, it became evident how much I really do love finishing with gold. I love it in paint form, as well as glitter and even sprinkle form. Here are some examples of how a touch of gold can make a difference:

Very-Vanilla Butter Sponge Cake–with a painted gold trim on a simple white layer cake really adds some quick-glitz to an otherwise traditional cake.

Artist’s Palette & Paintbrush Cookies–using gold paint to create a realistic paintbrush detail as well as adding some glam to the palettes themselves.

Love & Luxury: Boxed Chocolate Mini Cakes–in its full glory, I used 24-karat edible gold paint to completely coat a faux foil-wrapped heart cake to look like it belonged in a box of luxury chocolates. Now that’s gold!

Old-Fashioned Party Cake–sometimes breaking out the paintbrush isn’t even necessary: just a few sprinkles of edible gold stars will do the trick to add a dreamy-factor to an otherwise old-fashioned cake.

Even though a little glitz does go a long way, sometimes a lot of glitz goes even farther, as with these Gilded & Glittered Mini Sugar Cookies. If you’d like to recreate these cookies, here is the how-to:

Gilded & Glittered Mini Sugar Cookies

1. Roll/bake/cut your favourite sugar cookie dough into mini shapes of your choice (I used about 1″ sizes: heart, circle, rectangle, square, & diamond).

2. Dye fondant into desired colours–I used a combination of AmeriColor Navy Blue with some Black for the blue, and Spectrum Egg Yellow with a touch of Dark Brown for the gold. I used ivory fondant for the ivory glitter cookies.

2. Roll out fondant to 1/8″ on cornstarch or confectioners’ sugar and cut out matching shapes. Let dry.

3. Take a piece of parchment paper, and create a sharp fold in the middle, laying page out like an open book.

4. Place dry fondant pieces (finish all pieces of each colour before moving to next) on parchment and paint each fondant piece with an even, but thin, layer of water.

5. Sprinkle edible glitter by tapping jar gently over-top of each piece, then using paper to shift them around the excess glitter. Use tweezers to gently flip and coat. Place on clean surface to dry. Once done with sprinkling the glitter, you can use the crease in the paper to slide excess glitter back into jar. Can’t waste the gorgeous glitter! I used Disco Dust in Navy Blue, Ivory, and 24-karat gold.

6. Once dry (several hours at least), pipe a small amount of royal icing onto cookie using a piping bag and small tip, such as #2 or #3, then gently places sparkled fondant onto cookie. Let set (dries quickly!). Ta-da!

I hope you have a perfectly golden weekend!

Good luck & enjoy!

Love, Rosie xo

    Rossssieeee!! Hello lovely love!

Awesome cookies, and fab use of gold in your baking. I always notice that!

I am so with you. I heart gold. My sister makes fun of my love of gold too. I have lots of gold heels, a huge gold handbag that I love. It’s a nice funky gold, and the bag is so huge it is borderline funny, but I love HUGE handbags too ;)

But the really funny thing is that, I love black and my sis always says, you love black and gold and think they look good together. Ahem, I will have to send her the new trend forecasts in Bazaar Mag about black and gold ;)

I also love lace. And am sort of horrified that it is trendy right now too. I dont’ want it to be a fad ;)

But then again, this post wasn’t about fashion was it? Maybe a little…

    I LOVE the glitter cookies.

You know what your cookies in the shots with blue and white ones make me think of? A fantastic vintage school band, in all their blue and white and gold…. I LOVE uniforms as such ;)

    Loooove, V

ps: I need to go to the city house and get my navy and gold sailor Ralph Lauren blazer asap ;)

    pss: perfect Oscar cookies!

I love those cookies! Now I need to think of a reason to buy edible glitter in every color. Because like normal, a couple just won’t satisfy me. I also wrote a post on my love of gold a bit ago: http://www.daydreamincolor.com/?p=74

    Hi…I absolutely adore your creations!
Quick question – which 24 karat gold glitter dust do you use to paint items gold?

I really want to play with some and want to order the one that you use – it seems the right shade and quality.

    Thank you
